![]() ![]() Once back on the return Mud Whole trail it’s an easy 3/4 mile trip back to the parking lot. We hiked the 1.5 miles taking the right loop side of the trail and got to the coastline rocks ( the most difficult part, some serious big slippery rocks to navigate) The coastline part was about 1.5 miles but seemed much longer, due to the rock obstacles and the time to find the white blaze marks as it winds back and forth meandering from beach, rocks and wooded trail. Since there’s zero cell service out there we ended up getting sidetracked 3 times using a Nav App so I printed a map to use, which was □ helpful on finding the trailhead and navigating the hard to follow trail, (only on the rocky coastline parts) the wooded trail was sufficiently marked. We were staying on Beals Island and it was only a 10 minute drive to the trailhead. Was up for a summer family event with relatives and decided to checkout The Great Wass Island Preserve Trail. As it was, we were all fully clothed but that didn't stop most of us from getting in the water. I would have packed a backpack lunch and spent the day there. We were almost the only ones there! I wish I had understood how lovely it would be in advance. We visited Popham State Park later in the week and it could not compare to the beauty of this secluded beach. The total driving distance from Havre, MT to Glacier National Park is 215 miles or 346 kilometers. That aside, this was AWESOME!!! Such a gorgeous hike and then the beach!! THE BEACH!! Amazing. Carter Nature Preserve, Surry Roque Bluffs State Park, Roque Bluffs Southern Maine (Kittery to Brunswick, and West to N.H. Literally hundreds of bites on every person. La Verna Nature Preserve, Bristol Fernald’s Neck Preserve, Camden Cross Cushing Nature Preserve, Cushing Salt Bay Farm, Damariscotta Curtis Farn Preserve, Harpswell. We *gasp!* FORGOT THE BUG SPRAY, and suffered the consequences for the next 3 days of our trip. I'm not exaggerating here - the bugs are a HUGE issue. This is a popular trail for hiking and snowshoeing, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. ![]() Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 34 min to complete. There were some rough patches where the ground has not fully dry, so despite the ease of the hike, I'd recommend shoes, if not boots.Great 2 mile hike to the beach. I did it twice, just to make sure I took it all in. ![]() I took the longest walk possible - a loop that cuts through the forest to a ocean-side trail and then takes you back up again. The freshness of the air hits your face and you can smell both the pine and deciduous trees. That was not an issue for me, but might be for bigger groups. You pass first through a privately owned trail area that was donated for public use, with warnings to avoid disturbances. It was pointed out as an underrated hike by a tour company on a local boating outing I decided to go early morning to avoid any crowds that might come at this end of season time. This was among my favorites ventures, as we stayed in the Bristol peninsula. ![]()
