Figure the Pathfinder 15R suits my needs, but was also thinking of getting a small watt tube amp. although I stayed with 12AX7's in the pre.Ä«etween the two, the Pro, Jr. Is it as good as a three-tube brownface Fender from 1960 No, but again very respectable for gigging or recording more than passable for bedroom rehearsal. Neither one is modded, except I have Groove-tubes in the Pro, Jr. Actually, I bought it for the tremolo, but have had a ton of fun using it for rhythm parts I record it on at least 1/4 of my songs, and I do not find the typical S/S objections (harsh, trebly, un-dynamic). It's loud enough, very responsive, and the reverb, tremolo and the boost-gain switch are awesome extras. I bought the Pathfinder over the summer, and while I really do not want to, in that its solid-state, I love the thing. To me it sounds better than the Vox tube amps of the same size. It's a 15W solid state amp with an 8' Bulldog speaker, and at 120, it is incredibly lightweight, portable, and offers some clean tones that are far superior to other SS practice amps (some even say they rival the AC30). These Pathfinders are really great little amps A lot of people share my opinion that this may be the finest solid state amp that Vox has ever produced, especially for recording. 1 From search around various forums, it seems that Vox is no longer making their wildly popular Pathfinder 15/15R. and more like a Vox with blues than the lower priced Vox tube amps. Isn't that usually the case, that tube amps sound warmer that SS's I was just googling to take a look at the VR15 and I see it's discontinued now. It's setup as a one channel with gain, master, treb and bass, and a boost switch. The trem doesn't go deep/intense enough for a real trem nut (me). At low settings, the reverb isn't bad, but it shows off cheap-spring sound at high settings. ![]() It also seems to take effects very well, and I especially like a tube-pedal in front. The main difference between the two is that the Cambridge 15 has a tube preamp, and the Pathfinder is all solid-state. for about 10 years, and love it it's very versatile and only a touch noisy, although quite loud if you want the gain. I assume you are talking about the new, low-end Vox amps. I miss mine, but if I was going for a Vox SS right now, I'd look at the AC15VR very closely. The gain and boost features also sounded quite good.
